Affective Priming, explained.
Affective priming investigates how a preceding stimulus with affective content can influence a subsequent evaluation. Murphy and Zajonc studied this under particular exposure and awareness conditions.
Why it happens
Nine manual trials pair DELIGHT, DREAD or NEUTRAL with three original patterns. Readers supply pleasantness ratings from one to five. Each context appears three times, once with each pattern; the summary reports actual ratings and means without adding an assumed priming effect.

Read the result
Compare the ratings you supplied under each context, then inspect what the activity cannot control. The interface never alters your rating to create a priming effect.
A worked example
Context before an unfamiliar symbol
Rate each symbol after its visible context word, using the full one-to-five scale only as your own judgment warrants.
Complete all nine trials and inspect the three ratings recorded under each of the three context words.
A difference describes this attempt. Fixed order, visibility and repeated symbols prevent attribution to a subliminal or isolated causal mechanism.

Where this idea is useful
A practical use
An evaluator can ask whether preceding context might be relevant when interpreting an immediate reaction to an unfamiliar design.
A common misconception
“A visible word-rating exercise proves unconscious priming.”
The original research manipulated exposure conditions. This manual activity makes context salient and cannot establish unconscious processing or reproduce those conditions.
What this explanation leaves out
- Visible words, repeated patterns, fixed order and nine unblinded ratings do not reproduce subliminal laboratory procedures or establish causality. Neither a difference nor its absence validates the original primacy hypothesis.
What if my ratings do not differ by context?
That is a legitimate recorded result. Nine unblinded judgments neither confirm nor disconfirm a broader research claim under different experimental conditions.
Which context should an evaluator record before interpreting an immediate preference?
